All About Solar Energy And Its Uses

Solar energy is primarily the heat that comes from the sun. Over the years, people have been using the energy from the sun for both commercial and for domestic use. For example, people in the third world countries used the energy from the sun to dry grains. In the technological world, energy from the sun is used in solar heating, solar architecture, solar thermal electricity and solar voltaism.

People prefer to use the energy from the sun, because it’s a clean and renewable. The fact that the sun is present all the time, it makes the sun a reliable source of energy. In the renewable source category, we have other energy sources like wind, water and steam. The energy from the sun is very important in that it’s a cheap source of energy and it’s easily accessible. The energy from the sun is converted to electricity by photo voltaic cells in the solar panels. Ever since electricity became expensive, some encourage others to make your own solar panels. The cells in the panels are combined to form modules called arrays. The number of arrays that are used determine the amount of electricity that will be produced. In large scale manufacture of electricity, the energy is normally focused on mirrors to create heat that in turn run generators to produce electricity.

The uses of energy from the sun are numerous. As earlier quoted, energy from the sun is used in heating water. In the heating system there are two main parts: the storage part and the solar collecting part. The collecting part is the one that has been made in a way that has a transparent cover to trap the sun rays. The rays are to heat a plate that absorbs it and this heats the water then it’s drained into the storage tank.

The energy from the sun is also used in the horticultural and agricultural sector. While the plants are growing, they need sunlight. In the horticultural sector, the energy from the sun that is trapped by the use of the green houses is used to keep the plants warm and aid in ripening. Another use of this energy is that it can be use for water distillation. The sun is used to distill water that is salty by putting it in plastic bottles and placing them under the sun for quite sometime.

Energy from the sun can also be used to produce electricity. The energy from the sun is the one that is normally converted into electricity. As mentioned earlier, the energy from the sun is focused on mirrors then the mirrors in turn focus the energy to a beam that is usually smaller in size as compared to the mirrors. The energy is also used in solar vehicles. It was a great achievement since making solar powered vehicles had been in plan ever since the 80’s. Some vehicles use solar for air conditioning so as to minimize the amount of fuel used.

The use of this source of energy is also cheap. In domestic use, you only need to have a solar panel and you will have electricity. Commercially, after the power plant has been constructed, all you need is to keep servicing the equipment in use.

The History Of Hydropower

Hydropower is one of the most successful producers of electricity today. It’s considered greener than many other forms of electricity production, and has numerous benefits. Hydropower isn’t new, however. Ancient civilizations have been using hydropower for a variety of reasons for thousands of years. Many of these techniques are still in use today, though new forms of hydropower are also used in addition to hydroelectricity.

Water Wheels

It’s not uncommon to see a painting of a picturesque water wheel in a calm stream. These are more than just a pretty picture though. Water wheels made power by spinning the wheel, and filling the attached containers with water. The water in the buckets was usually used for irrigation, while the spinning of the wheel was used as a grain mill. The basic function of the water wheel inspired modern hydroelectricity production.

Water Clocks

As much as 800 years ago, water was used to power clocks. These clocks allowed water to flow through a small opening which correctly measured the passage of time, much like an hourglass. The clocks ranged from exceedingly simple to impressively elaborate. The wealthy had clocks that were capable of chimes, and some of these clocks were even displayed by royal families.

Irrigation

Hydropower is commonly used in irrigation systems today, but it first began in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians constructed flat basins on the shores of the Nile. These basins had rivulets leading to the river that allowed a steady stream of water. It allowed the Egyptians to have successful crops even during dry years. They were additionally able to produce crops almost year round as a result of this.

Wave Power

Fairly new to the world of hydropower is wave power. This power is produced by generators floating on the surface of water. These are permanently anchored to the ocean floor to prevent loss or damage. Waves lift and sway the buoys and creates energy within the generator. This energy is then transmitted to a distribution center. Some boats also use wave power as an alternate source of energy.

Tidal Power

The cycles of the moon cause changes in the tides that can be harnessed into tidal power. Using the differences between high and low tides, generators use the wax and wane of the tide to produce energy in a manner similar to hydroelectric plants. Though there are currently no production plants in existence to produce electricity from the tides, there’s the possibility for them in the future.

As with most things, the evolution of hydropower has a long and detailed history. From the ancient Egyptians to modern day hydro plants, the use of water for power has proven successful. Because of its sustainability and potential for future advancements, hydropower will likely continue to develop. Advancements that may harness the energy of the ocean are especially encouraging, as this will enable society to better preserve freshwater sources. The most interesting aspect of hydropower, however, is not its potential for the future: it’s how little it’s changed in thousands of years.

Uses For Solar Power

Solar Power is among many kinds of power and sources that can be used to do particular activities such as moving machinery and running others that are used in every day’s work to accomplish many tasks. There are tasks like running machines in industries and in other house hold items that use electrical power and even in office to run computers and other device that are applied to make work easier and more efficient. However, there are places that do not supply electric power lines and they do not have generators that can supply them with electrical power.

Thus, there is need to have another kind of power that is reliable to supply the place with electricity. It can be a place like a home or an office and even in police stations and others. Electricity that is produced from solar is just the same as the one that is produced from water and from nuclear reactors. It can be used in the same way like the other kind of electricity to run devices that use electricity.

Production Generation of Solar Power

Solar energy is the cheapest and the simplest way to have electricity in your home, office or any other place that you feel like. There are things that you have to consider when you’re thinking about producing electricity. They’re things like the cost of the production and the reliability of the kind of electricity that you have. Solar electricity is good and reliable, because it does not involve other kinds of resources that are so expensive. It just requires you to install the facilities that are required right at the beginning and then you just have to ensure that the whole system is not tampered with.

The facilities that are necessary are a solar panel and cables that transfer the electric current from the solar panel to the meters and other devices that are used to regulate the current and then it’s distributed to where it’s needed. Other than just using the solar electricity, it requires to be observed, because it can cause hazards just like the electricity that is produced using other means. It requires people who have all the necessary skills to do the installation, so that everything is observed and it’s ensured that safety precautions are taken into account.

The Production Process

Solar panels are displayed in an area that does not have anything else to obstruct the rays of the sun to enable them to land on the solar panel and they’re converted from heat into electricity. After they’re converted, there is a lot of impact that they have on the owner or the producer of the electricity. Making your own solar panels has brought a lot of benefits to the people who use solar power, because it’s produced in a very cheap way and has little maintenance costs. If it does have the system broken down or if it gets some problems. The benefits of this kind of electricity are good, because it does not have any kind of extra cost that is incurred by the user of the electricity.

Merits and Demerits of Nuclear Power

Nuclear power is a source of energy that is becoming widely used. It’s power that is generated from a metal known as uranium. More people are embracing this power because of its efficiency. The leading producers of this power are Japan, France and the US. This power provides for about 11 percent of the energy needs that the world has. There are a lot of advantages that come with using this type of power as a source of energy. This source of energy does not cost a lot to make. The power is also clean and does not contribute to the green house effect. Unlike other types of energy sources, it dose not emit gases that are harmful to the environment. Another good thing about this power is that one does not need to have a lot of fuel to be able to produce a lot of energy. With just a little fuel this type of power can be produced in large quantities.

The amount of waste that nuclear power produces is not much. Even though one produces power in very large amounts, they will have minimal waste. Another good thing about this power source is that it’s very reliable. This power can be produced almost anywhere unlike other energy sources such as oil that have to be imported. Users of this type of power do not need to refuel frequently like it is with oil. This type of power is very efficient. There are no fears of it going out or getting finished in the process of being used. The power is very safe to use and it dos not pose a lot of danger like other sources of energy. It does not need for one to be extra careful when using this power. The costs of running a plant for this kind of power are very low and one will not incur a lot of expenses while running this power plant. They will be able to recover the amount that he used to start the plant in no time.

There has been a debate going on around the world as to whether this kind of power is safe to us. There have been several disadvantages of this kind of power as a source of energy that have been brought forward. One of the main disadvantages of this kind of power is, that it’s very expensive to come up with the plant for producing this kind of power. The waste that is produced during the production of this type of power is also very harmful to people and the environment if not handled carefully. Another major concern that this type of power raises in people is that the producing plants were built without looking at possible catastrophes. If something like an earthquake or an explosion occurs, the plant might end up claiming the lives of a lot of people because of the contents that it has. In as much as there are disadvantages of using this power as a source of energy, the merits are many and can not be overlooked.

An Insight to Solar Energy

Energy is an important component of human wellbeing. Solar energy is the safest and most efficient source of energy. Energy being a major source of power, many people in the world have developed means and ways of tapping energy for use. There are different modes and types of energy that can be utilized to provide power, but energy that is harnessed from the sun stands out as the most efficient and reliable.

Energy from the sun is being preferred over other forms of energy due to its inexhaustible nature. The sun’s rays being a common and constant feature in daily life, energy tapping becomes a guaranteed venture. The energy that is tapped can be used in the generation of power that can be used in the industries hence contributing to the growth of the economy of a given state. Energy from the sun is also a form of renewable energy in the sense that it can not be depleted. This forms a good option for alternative energy. Due to its renewable nature, energy harnessed from the sun proves to be a trusted and reliable source of power.

Energy from the sun is also the safest among all other forms of energy. The process of harnessing that power is also easy and does not require expert or experienced handling. Due to this nature, many people in the world are embracing this mode of energy since it’s safe to handle and can be controlled with ease. Many homesteads have shifted from using other forms of energy and opted for harnessing energy from the sun. In accordance with the bid to save the universe from pollution, this mode or energy is environmentally friendly. It’s derived in a natural way hence ensuring that it does not pollute the environment. Since it is a natural source of energy provided by the sun, it also has health benefits.

The Benefits of Having Homemade Solar Panels

In actuality, homemade solar panels can help reduce your energy bills and contribute to the protection of the environment. Although solar panels can be constructed with the help of professional builders you can absolutely save more money if you opt to make it on your own.

About Solar Panels

Solar panels are specially made to generate electricity by harnessing the natural energy from the sun’s rays. Solar panels take in the wavelengths of the sunlight and transform these into heat and energy for the home. These panels can be installed professionally but there are also homemade solar panels.

These panels can be constructed alone by using do it yourself solar panels kits or by purchasing separate materials. By following the manual or guide you can come up with a solar power system that will be efficient enough supplying energy to your home. These panels can work even on cloudy days but works even better during bright sunny days.

Making Your Own Solar Panels

If you are interested about how to build a solar panel you have the option to buy simple solar panel kits and start experimenting on it. These kits provide you with all the materials, instructions and designs needed in order to finish the task. Having homemade solar panels is the latest trend today among homeowners.

These kits are not expensive at all which only cost about a few hundred dollars. Thus, the overall cost of installing do it yourself solar panels is definitely worth the funding. These panels will pay for themselves after a few months so it is really an excellent investment. A lot of people who have bought solar power kits have done all the work without the help of professional contractors. Hence, knowing how to build a solar panel does not require technical experience at all so you do not need professional builders to accomplish the job for you.

Essentially, do it yourself solar panels are evident these days as more people are becoming aware of the importance of preserving the environment and other resources. Solar panels are even seen on office buildings and factories. Yet, these panels are seen more on residential areas more than ever as these can offer a lot of savings on energy bills.

Hence, if you want to know about your home all you have to do is to purchase solar panel kits at your local hardware store, home improvement stores and even some websites. These kits are hitting high sales as more and more people are considering the idea of using solar panels to become eco-friendly and at the same time save a great deal on electricity.

There are also instances where electric companies would pat households for excess energy that they produce through the feed-in-tariff systems. Thus, solar panels are not only installed to protect the environment and to save on energy bills but to earn money as well. Truly, building homemade solar panels are definitely worth the time, effort and money.

Solar Power Vs Hydropower

In the search for alternative energy, one of the most common debates is between those supporting solar power and those supporting hydropower. Both of these sources have advantages and disadvantages, though, making both sides of the argument valid.

Solar Power

One of the greatest disadvantages to solar power is the cost of the equipment. Solar panels can be expensive, and homemade solar power can seem impractical. However, some homeowners who install solar panels may qualify for a tax breaks. The reduction in utility costs means the solar power eventually pays for itself, though it’s a long term investment.

Location also plays a large role in whether or not solar power is a wise decision. Because solar energy is reliant upon energy absorbed from the sun, areas that don’t get strong sunlight generally won’t benefit from solar energy.

Home design can also be detrimental to solar energy. The position of the roof and structure of the home may not support the weight of the panels, and could also not be oriented correctly. Newly constructed homes designed to accommodate solar panels won’t have this problem, however.

Those who choose to use solar energy generally have an agreement with an electric company so any shortage of solar power will be compensated for by the electric company. Even during times when solar energy is low, this means an extremely low bill will be generated.

Hydropower

One of the most argued disadvantages of hydropower is the cost associated with building a new dam. Although a new dam generally means new jobs, it can also put a financial strain on the community. The funds spend building the dam are returned in revenue, however, though it takes many years to become profitable.

Another concern with hydropower is the environmental damage that can occur as a result of the dam. Several things are affected when a new dam is built. First, there’s geographical damage and the potential to trigger earthquakes. A dam can also negatively impact the wildlife of the river. Migratory fish can disappear as a result of a new dam, and local wildlife may disappear as a result of the construction and drastic change in environment.

The benefit to hydropower is a continually sustainable source of energy that impacts only its immediate environment. Additionally, once initial construction costs are met, hydropower is generally affordable to those who use it.

All things considered, the best source of energy is dependent upon the specific needs of an individual or company. Though the advantages of solar power may seem to far outweigh those of other energy sources, it’s important to remember that solar energy cannot cover all the energy usage of one home or company at all times. In those instances, a home powered mainly by solar energy and partially by hydropower is likely the most environmentally friendly. Regardless of the energy source, however, it’s crucial to the health of society and the world to use a sustainable, renewable source of energy whenever possible.

Advantages of Using Hydro Power

Learn the Benefits of Hydro Power

All forms of power are not the same as hydro power, because it has some advantages that are unique to it. It’s a reliable form of power because the main raw material that is used to produce it, is purely natural and it does not cost anything to obtain it. Water is the determining factor to production of this kind of electricity, because it is the one that is used to turn the turbines that rotate to run the generators. After the rotation occurs, the hydro electricity is produced by the generators, so that it can be used by consumers in their homes, places of work, industries and even in offices. Other than availability of water, there are no harmful by-products that are formed after the electricity is produced. So, it makes the production of electricity safe to both the people and the environment. There are no harmful rays and by-products like in other forms of power which can harm the environment and people who live around the power station.

Cost of Hydro Power

Other than when the construction of the main and substations is being done, the other kinds of maintenance are very cheap and it does not require a lot of money, nor does it need to be repaired every now and then. The electricity is produced in a far distance away from the people and therefore there is nothing that can make the production to interfere with the activities or the lives of the people. Electricity bills of this form of electricity are usually low and affordable by all than in other forms of power that could be used in homes like: using generators and using fuel. Supply to the consumers is done through power supply lines that are of different sizes and they also carry different voltages.

Materials Used In Transmitting Power

Materials that are used to transmit hydro power are supposed to be made of good conductors of electricity which are aluminum and cooper, so that the electric power can reach where it’s wanted efficiently with much inconveniences. The people who handle electricity are highly qualified personnel and they can do the work very professionally. Therefore, they avoid all the errors that could occur during production.

Affordability of Hydro Power

If just positioned with other kinds of power, this form of electricity is quite affordable to install and maintain, because it does not require much attention like the other forms. It just requires the power station to be constructed and then the water is then channeled there, so that it can turn the turbines and produce electricity. In other kinds of electric power, there are many activities that have to be done all the time to enable the production of electricity to be possible. The maintenance is also affordable, because it does not have to be done frequently. Monitoring of the whole process is done through computers for high accuracy: detection of mistakes is also made high so that everything can be streamlined.

Making Homemade Solar Panels is Easy

Many are actually willing to take advantage of the free and natural energy that comes from the sun in order to save money on energy bills and to protect the environment. Yet, the only problem that anyone can encounter is the cost of installation and the materials needed to come up with an effective solar power system. Fortunately, learning how to build a solar panel is not a difficult undertaking so you can absolutely come up with homemade solar panels at a very low cost.

Solar Power as an Investment

Making your own solar panel system is not as complex as you may think. It does not require specialized tools and technical skills because all it takes is your effort. So, if you want to build your homemade solar panels you can absolutely accomplish it just by being determined. The price does not matter as you can definitely recover from your capital in a matter of months most especially if you make use of do it yourself solar panels that are more affordable.

Solar Panel- Starting With the Project

You can start with your project by purchasing solar cells that will comprise your homemade solar panels. These solar cells are widely available at your local hardware stores but you can also purchase one over the internet. Solar cells usually measure 3”x 6” and can generate 0.5 volts each piece. Typically, each panel can produce up to 18 volts so you will need about 36 solar cells to build a panel.

What you need to do is to create a layout of your design and take proper measurements as you will need to build a wooden box to house the solar cells. It is suggested to make use of wood that is water and weather proof so you can guard your do it yourself solar panels very well. It must be noted to use enough glue when attaching the cells to the frame to allow for proper expansion and shrinking once the panels are used. It is advisable to let the glue dry completely before going to the next process.

The next thing that you should do in constructing “do it yourself solar panels” is to attaché small tabs on the cells to attach the cells together and connect a diode as well to regulate the flow of electricity. This is how easy it is to learn how to build a solar panel so you do not have to feel intimidated with the project if you are the technical type of person.

Another tip in building your homemade solar panels is to cover them with the use of clear plastic or any type of covering material. This is an essential thing to remember on learning how to build a solar panel because this simple step will protect your panels from potential hazards. However, you must not glue the cover into pace as you will need to remove it on a regular basis. Instead, you can make use of screws so that you can remove and bring it back to place with easily.

What is solar power? It can be explained as the process by which sunlight is converted into electricity directly or indirectly. In direct conversion photovoltaic are used while in indirect conversion concentrated solar powers are used. Photovoltaics use photoelectric effect to convert sunlight into electric current. On the other hand concentrated solar power systems uses mirrors to focus sunlight into a beam.

Its power usage can be dated as early as the 1860s but with minimum usage at that time. However, its development was curtailed by the availability of coal and petroleum, hence less advancements on methods of electricity generation using solar power had less advancements.

In the 1980s is where the very first concentrated commercial solar power plants was developed. California is said to be the home of the biggest solar power plant with a 354MW SEGS concentrated solar power installation. In photovoltaic plants India and United States home the largest plants. The average growth of photovoltaic production has been estimated as 40% annually since 2000. The concentrated solar power plants are said to have their advantage in their ability to cost effectively add thermal storage, thus allowing the dispatch-ment of electricity for up to a 24hr period duration.

The greatest drawback to electricity generation using this method is its high installation cost. Never the less, this is a very reliable method of electricity generation because of its source which is sunlight. In a closer look to its advantages is: After installation of the power plant there is very little maintenance cost needed and secondly sunlight is readily available. Typically it’s clear to conclude and indicate that deserts are the most suitable places to set up these power plants, because of the favorable climatic conditions in the deserts and the success of all the plants developed and established in the various deserts in the world.

A total overlook on the advantages and disadvantages of this method of electricity generation to both the environment and humans. To humans it can be used to generate electricity in both large and small scale that is depending on the installation. It’s also renewable in that sunlight which in this case, is the energy source can be re-used over and over. Its other greatest advantage is that it’s cheap, because it’s source of energy is the sun. To the environment it’s eco-friendly and there is no pollution to the environment. Its greatest disadvantage as earlier mention, is its initial installation cost, the cost of either establishing a power plant or even a panel is high.

Then why embrace solar technology? The ability to harness power even in very remote areas, the desert. It’s the easiest way to bid electricity bills goodbye. It has a promising source, the sun. It’s almost obvious that in the morning the sun will rise. With going green and keeping our environment safe, then this is the way to go. Technology is also enabling the storage of electricity.

Methods of Generating Hydro Power and Its Advantages

There are so many sources of energy in the world namely hydro power, wind, solar energy, biomass, geothermal power, fossil fuels and nuclear power. In order to get most of these sources to produce energy, a lot of money is required. In this text, we are going to focus on the first source of energy on the list. Hydro means water and so the energy produced is got from water. In most countries, the power from the water is usually used in the production of hydro electric power. The hydro electricity plants are usually located along big rivers where the pressure is high.

To enable the river to keep flowing and to produce electricity, a dam is usually constructed on the river and the dykes are normally put in place to regulate water flow. After the power plant has been constructed, all the government or the company needs is to employ people that are highly skilled to run the machines.

There are several ways of generating hydro electric power. We have the conventional method which is the use of the water in the dam. In this method, there has to be a turbine and a generator. The amount of watts produced by the dam depends on the volume of the outflow of the water. Another method of generating hydro electricity is the run –of- the -river method. This method is used where by there is no storage capacity. In this method, the turbine and the generator are always turned because any of water that flows is to be used made into electricity immediately for when it flows, it cannot be recovered. The last method of generating power is the pumped-storage. In this method, the water is stored when the electricity demand is low and when the demand is high; it’s pumped to the dam.

The following are the advantages of water power. It can be used to generate electricity as cited above. The pressure that is usually in the water is the one that is able to propel the turbines that are used in the production of electricity. As we all know, the uses of hydro electricity are immense. The use of hydro electricity has been adapted in many countries that have high pressure rivers and some countries are also using the tides in the sea to produce electricity. In the olden days, the water power was used to drive mills which in turn milled flour. Water power was also used for irrigation. The power in the water was used to drive water wheels which in turn raised water into the irrigation canals. It’s a renewable source of energy.

The power that is any water body mass is calculated from the rate at which it flow and water density. In most countries, there are some dams that people are usually advised to avoid getting near them because of the currents they have. As at now, it’s the cheapest source of energy, because putting up the electricity generating plant is cheaper as compared to other sources of energy. It’s also the energy source that pollutes the environment the least and hence the name, “clean fuel”.

Wind Vs Water

There’s increased awareness about the need for an environmentally friendly, renewable energy source. The possibilities are constantly thrown around with no explanation whatsoever. It’s important, then, to know the differences between production types, and the benefits and disadvantages of each.

Capabilities

The production capabilities of each alternative energy source must be taken into account. Because alternative energy sources often use different terminology than what most people are used to, the calculations can be confusing. For example, one measurement uses the weight of the source that’s required to create wattage. In this measurement, hydropower is far more efficient than wind power, as it uses less weight to produce more wattage. This is most evident in smaller quantities, such as the micro production generators, which are too small to power homes.

Affordability

In an economy that seems unable to rise from a decline, it’s also vital to consider cost. If the average home is unable to afford the electricity produced, it’s no longer a viable source of energy. Hydropower costs are estimated as less than one cent per KwH (kilowatt hour), making it extremely affordable. Wind power, on the other hand, is estimated to cost more than three cents per KwH. Though some statistics show that the cost of wind power is decreasing, hydropower is currently more affordable for the average household. It’s possible however, that wind power may gradually become more affordable. Considering the frequent use of wind power in Europe, it’s even likely that wind power will soon become the dominant source of electricity.

Uses

Frugality is becoming more important, and society is increasingly aware of the necessity of multi-purposing. Windmills used to generate wind power use valuable land that could be used for farming or affordable housing. While wind power is a pure form of green energy, the production of that energy seems to simply use space. Alternatively, hydropower has several purposes. Not only are the dams created for hydropower, but they also provide drinking water. The reservoirs are used for recreation and water reserves as well.

Reliability

Wind power is dependent upon wind. If the wind isn’t blowing, no power is being produced. Though power may be stored for later use, windmills don’t guarantee constant production of electricity. While it’s unlikely that the power reserves of windmills will be used entirely, it’s not outside of the realm of possibility. Hydropower can be controlled. Higher need for electricity can prompt increased production. Additionally, because the production of hydroelectricity is constant, the stored electricity is constantly replenished.

Though hydropower and wind power both have advantages and disadvantages, the best solution is likely a combination of both. Using wind power as a primary source and hydropower as a secondary source, the financial, environmental, and economical requirements can all be met. The source of electricity is seldom a choice in the average household, however. The forward movement of green energy is largely reliant upon electrical corporations and government regulations. It can be hoped, however, that alternate sources of energy will soon become the norm instead of the exception.

The Fundamentals Of Energy Saving Residential Solar Systems

Imagine using solar power panels to save money and help the environment. Now you can with renewable energy solar panels. The basic operation is amazingly quite simple, they harness the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity. The electricity allocated to locations in the dwelling and is saved in batteries. A regulator is positioned between the batteries and the panel, ensuring they won’t get an overcharge and providing insurance they’re not overused. With the use of a transformer, solar energy is converted from 12 and 24 volts into 220 and 240 volts. This will depend on your dwelling’s electrical output. Systems are protected by control components that automatically cut the power being sent. Manufacturers have designed systems that display the operation of the batteries and solar panels, making them easy to monitor.

The use of renewable energy has infiltrated into modern recreational activities as well the home. For using solar panels for RV’s, it’s best to use panels that fold and adjust. This makes them very convenient while hiking a trail, camping, and setting up the campsite. Whether these compact portable panels are used for outdoor activities or in the RV, they add to the comfort of being at home. There’s a lot of outdoor campsites where solar panels could be used.

Some Thoughts on Choosing The Right Size for Your House

Solar power works on a rated system of output power. Let’s say your solar panel has 75 watts of stored renewable energy. You can make that into 75 watts of new usable electricity. There’s known factors that converts less than one-half of the 75 watts of full power. This comes down to what you’ll be using the solar panels for and the size of the grid, also factors in this equation. The bigger the grid, the more energy it will convert. If you’re looking into a renewable energy system for your house then, yes, size does matter. If you’re looking for just outdoor activities, a small and compact model will be sufficient. There’s even systems to charge your new hybrid automobile which will create enough electricity to charge your vehicle every day.

One of the biggest factors in determining solar panels is to know how much power you need to generate and to choose the right size accordingly. You can make the solar panels yourself. The Internet is full of information on how to build them step-by-step. Keep in mind ,that while it might take some time, the savings of doing it yourself can be considerable.

The best thing you can do is figure out how many watts all of your appliances are using. Factor in electricity use from water pumps, light fixtures, electronics, and appliances. Then factor in how many hours are allocated for each day on each item. The last step is to multiply the hours by the individual items on a daily basis. This will give you an accurate reading for the right size solar panels. Using this information, you truly can use residential solar power at home.

The Solar Power Revolution

Photovoltaic cells, commonly known as solar cells, are containers which generate electrical force through solar power or light energy. The word photovoltaic is derived from two Greek words, “photo” meaning light and “volt” meaning electrical force. A cell, as it relates to solar energy is the container or receptacle which houses the electrodes used in power generation.

Thus, solar or photovoltaic cells convert light energy into electricity. Although these cells are designed to function in solar energy collection directly from the sun, solar cells are able to use any light source for electrical power generation.

Charged particles in sunlight are called photons. Photons generate an electrical current or flow when they strike a solar cell’s surface and are absorbed by the semiconductor layer. A difference in potential is created when there’s an extra electron in one atom and another atom is missing an electron. Homeostasis, a state of equilibrium, is always the desired balanced state. Thus, the extra electron from one atom is pulled to the atom missing one.

A solar module, commonly referred to as a solar panel, refers to linked together solar cells. The panel or module produces electrical power in various amounts based upon the cells properties including number, efficiency and arrangement. Solar panels can be used singly or joined together generating even more power, called a solar array. The higher the number for solar panels linked together in an array, the more electricity produced.

Solar power or solar energy is the clean source for energy provided nearly without limits from the sun’s rays. Solar energy also provides long term savings in money and the planet. Older solar panels were expensive and inefficient, as well as bulky not easily utilized for home power. Newer 2nd generation panels are more compact, efficient and becoming more affordable everyday. Solar panels are quickly becoming a more realistic alternative to fossil fuel.

A decade ago, solar panels weren’t cost effective, costing more to install and utilize than they were worth. The 21st century has changed this simple reason why more people aren’t currently using solar power. New generation solar cells have improved techniques in manufacturing reducing materials, energy and costs associated with their production. Thin-film layering which involves coating ceramic or glass materials with substances used as semiconducting materials. This advancement in manufacturing technology enables solar panel production at a fraction of the previous cost.

New generation technologies for solar energy currently in development seek to further improve the efficiency and power production for solar cells while maintaining low manufacturing costs. Solar panels are being experimented with which will be able to convert sunlight into electricity upwards to 60 %. Ultraviolet and infrared cells are being researched which when added to traditional solar cells will be able to collect even more light from the spectrum as well as continually supply solar power night/day.

Solar energy has become a viable technology with a plethora in solar products hitting the consumer market from solar battery chargers to solar powered radios. Solar power is now a practical choice for people everywhere. Solar energy is here to stay, so prepare for the technological advancements in the solar power revolution.

Solar Wireless Power Transmission

Worldwide fossil fuel consumption and pollution continues to plague the Earth. The continued demand for global energy steadily rises. Global change rearranges climate conditions as a result from burning carbon fuels. Now for the good news: Solar Power Generation (SPG) based in space has the potential to not only provide a non-exhaustible energy supply but to also eradicate all these environmental concerns in one fell swoop.

Solar Power Satellites (SPS) launched from Earth are very expensive which is the primary reason these solar based power sources haven’t been previously implemented globally. However, nearly all the building materials for SPS can be obtained from the moon according to the Space Studies Institute. With only a fraction of the original SPS construction necessary as previously thought, the global future utilizing SPG sure looks much brighter.

Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) converts DC power collected from solar energy into microwave beams which can be navigated through space electronically. Remote locations on the planet can serve as beam receivers over many square miles reconverting them back into DC power and adding them onto the Earth’s electrical grids. The low density beam wouldn’t produce a feeling of warmth even if a person walked through it according to the non profit United Nations organization, SunSat Energy.

Japan has announced their intent to implement SPS into operation by 2040. This followed their 1990′s success in flying an airplane powered by microwave beams. The island nation is currently without its own resources for energy, and the recent string of natural disasters have prompted Japanese officials to take measures to ensure their continued energy supply. The potential use for WPT has many applications for non-terrestrial transport as well. Interstellar transport like the utilization for space sails, will enable sub-light speed beam powered propulsion through space. Interplanetary transport is another viable WPT application such as electric powered spaceships traveling within our Solar System. Future space explorations to the moons of Jupiter and further are possible using SPS placed on the inner planets propelling ships using laser beams.

Other successful methods prove the validity for Wireless Power Transmission utilizing microwave beams from the Earth. In 1975, experimental research was conducted in the tens for kW. Similar experiments on Reunion Island at Grand Bassin in 1997 provided similar methods for achieving distances with beam power.

Laser beam and radio frequency energy transmission to crafts have recently been suggested in developmental designs on propellants. Spacecraft mass could be significantly reduced utilizing Wireless Power Transmission. NASA’s website offers details regarding Solar Sails designs, and in conjunction with Texas A&M offers an interplanetary application illustrative example at their Center for Space Power. An interesting WPT application for Light Sails are discussed by Paul Woodmansee. NASA’s well-known space elevator would require WPT for its laser power support in climbing.

WPT applications all pointing toward a cleaner future with solar power generation being effectively used. Lasers and microwave beams could be the answer we’ve been seeking for our energy crisis as well as the solution to a greener approach to power.

Laser Power From Space, SERT Program

The program for Space Solar Power Exploratory Research and Technology was launched by NASA in 1999. With a 22 million dollar budget, SERT set out to aggressively formulate conceptual developmental space solar power (SSP) concepts and construct feasible design subsystems using advanced solar power satellite (SPS) technologies. In other words, SERT’s function is to develop a power station in space used to beam power to Earth.

Inflatable space equipment has been explored since the 1960′s. An inflatable space habitat, the Bigelow Next Generation Commercial Space Station, is scheduled for launch in 2014. Solar satellite power became a viable energy solution in the 1970′s, but didn’t garner as much public support nor interest as inflatables. The concept lost momentum due to high costs and inconsistency in technology. Solar power satellites haven’t been employed nor plausibly considered as economically viable renewable energy sources until the SERT program.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) has been utilized commercially in the US, Spain, Africa and the Middle East in the form of parabolic troughs. Using lenses or mirrors to concentrate sunlight, aka solar thermal energy, onto an area is a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system. The concentrated solar power is then converted into heat producing electricity. The heat energy is used to drive a heat engine which is attached to a generator for electrical power.

SERT’s objective was on a much larger, gigawatt scale needing a (SD) Solar Dynamic power system. Using inert gases and Brayton heat engines with a turbine, Solar Power Generation (SPG) for a SD system was devised.

The International Space Station currently employs a 160v photovoltaic array. The SERT goals are to successfully utilize a 1000v array while mitigating destructive arching, as well as developing solar cells which are flexible and thin film with increased efficiency.

Taking into consideration both geosynchronous and sun synchronous orbits, the scientists at NASA proposed a blow up photovoltaic gossamer with a lens able to concentrate an energy beam collected from the sun and direct it back to the Earth’s surface. This would be like a sheer, gauze like super-powered energy concentrator orbiting the Earth intended for supplying us with electrical power from collected solar power. The potential for global energy continual supplied directly from the sun is exciting. The cost if this laser beam capable of annihilating the planet got into the wrong hands is terrifying.

Economic factors such as payload launch prices and may inhibit the SERT program’s full actualization. Compared to alternatives in producing power, SPS’s are more environmentally advantageous and nearly 150% more efficient than anything currently used on the planet. Land and water limitations here on Earth are not problematic in the infinite space realm. SERT’s identifies SPS’s as serious considerations to meet the ever increasing global energy supply.

Amongst several factors affecting the economic viability for SSP, the lowering of space exploration costs and increases in SPS technological advancements are paramount. However, as the experts from NASA point out, the same economic issues exist for any conceptual solution for power generation to meet the demands for the 21st century.

Solar Energy Pros Vs. Cons

Deciding to install solar panels using solar energy should be prefaced by the weighing out of advantages and disadvantages. Maybe you don’t know enough about the pros or cons for solar power to make an informed decision, off the top of your head. In this article, solar energy pros vs. cons are clearly outlined helping you to decide if you’re ready and willing to power up with the sun’s renewable energy.

Pros

The main advantage to using solar energy is the economic savings in power consumption. Don’t be deceived by the steep upfront investment. Solar panels pay for themselves within the 2-5 years. If you plan to remain in your home for 10+ years, they’ll more than triple their investment costs in savings. A few reasons why you’ll save money include free energy harnessing, lifetime investment and no maintenance costs. Another pro is solar cells have a 30-40 year lifespan which means you install and forget about them.

Financial incentives offered by the state and federal government, such as tax reductions and rebates based on efficiency ratings, is an enticing advantage. The government seeks to encourage voluntary public utilization in renewable energy sources. Search the Internet for tax incentives in your area and country. You may be surprised at how much additional money you’ll save on your tax return after installing solar cell collecting devices on your rooftop.

Solar panels are available today in numerous sizes specific to desired power generation. Mounts designed to allow circulating air to cool the panels from the heat produced in the energy conversion process enable multiple positioning. Choices in location and arrangement for your solar array placement will optimize power production as well as appearance. Making your own solar panels is also a decision that could impact your choices

Diversity in application is another pro for solar energy. Solar cells which collect sunlight arranged in solar panels is a great movable way to easily use solar power. Mirrors and lenses strategically positioned for optimal light rays attraction creating heat energy can be effectively utilized for water heating, as well as cooking.

Quick availability and ease in installation are two more pros in using solar power. You could purchase solar panels today from your local hardware store or shop around for design styles on the Internet which offers home delivery in a week or two. Operational installation for solar cell panels takes literally minutes.

Solar energy is a renewable energy resource which reduces environmental pollution typically generated from burning fossil fuels. Another delightful green effect is solar power leaves no environmental footprint behind.

Cons

Upfront startup cost can be pricey making it unaffordable to some. The high cost results primarily from the expensive semiconductive materials necessary in solar cell manufacturing.

Less power is obtained by solar cells compared to the amounts garnered from fossil fuels.

Some geographic locations, like polar regions, don’t get enough sunlight on a regular basis to produce effective solar energy power.

Small structures, such as multi-unit apartments, with limited surface area for solar panel installation may not provide minimum efficiency requirements. In these cases, it wouldn’t pay to invest in solar energy.

Understanding Kilowatt’s for DYI Residential Solar Systems

When installing solar power panels in your home, it’s important to understand kilowatts. A typical residence will use about 25 kilowatts per hour of electricity. This article will help illustrate the calculation for the power needed in a solar energy system. Using the convenience of using a radiation map, scientists calculate that a typical house receives 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. This information is calculated on the Earth’s rotation, depending on the time of year, it can be predicted accurately at any given location within the United States. This gives us an advantage plotting the exact amount of direct sunlight using the physical location.

Determine Kilowatt Usage

Start by dividing the total average kilowatts used daily by the total amount of direct sunlight per day. Lets say you take 25 kilowatts per hour and then divide that by 5 hrs of direct sunlight, the results will be 5 kilowatts for the entire system. The average residential 5 kilowatt system will generate 25 kWhs with ideal conditions in the direct sunlight. Let’s factor in that some renewable energy will be consumed at peak times throughout the day and less during non peak usage times for solar energy systems.

Solar Modules Energy

Modules are determined by watts and will carry a voltage of 40 volts and generate 5 amps. So 40 volts x 5 amps = 200 watts, which explains when the system is in direct sunlight a module can generate 200 watts of renewable electricity. Electrical system components in a residential setting are rated with 600 volts of direct electrical current. It’s very unlikely that a solar array would require any more than 15 solar modules. Inverters do require less voltage to activate, therefore a solar series might only have 6 strings or less.

Products from solar cells, batteries, and panel modules can be neatly tied together in parallel or in a series. The energy produced will make a significant difference in the total energy stored in the system. Each module has a positive and negative pole. They work the exactly same way a battery would work in a flashlight, by connecting the solar panels in a series. The same application for modules applies to solar energy systems. One huge advantage of using a parallel system is the consistent flow of electricity, no matter if one of the strings gets damaged. When the system is tied together in one series, just one single broken string will shut down the entire system.

When installing residential solar power systems in a series, start by attaching the negative pole to one component and then the positive pole to the next. Modules that are connected in parallel increase the voltage rates. By unifying a long chain of modules that work in unison, components of the system become dependent on each other and jump starts the flow of current in the entire system. Don’t forget inverters are made to only carry so many amps. Remember, in a parallel string, 1 to 3 total strings is the most you might see. Hopefully, this information has helped you understand kilowatts and how they’re used in solar energy systems.

How Solar Power Works: A Simple Scientific Explanation

Solar cells are the energy collection components which are used by solar panels for solar power generation. The scientific name for solar cells is photovoltaic cells. The ever increasing necessity and environmental demands for renewable power resources presently have multiplied the manufacturing for these photovoltaic cells.

A condition, first observed in 1839, in which electrons are excited by light photons into an energy state acting as carriers for electrical charges in the current flow is referred to as the Photovoltaic Effect. This effect describes direct current (DC) electron flow which due to the polarized solar cell construction, can only move in one direction. When sunlight falls upon the cell’s 2 semi-conductive layers, electrons are knocked loose by the solar energy. The light photons are trapped in between the 2 oppositely charged layers. The negative layer gives up electrons to the other layer which is positively charged. This polarized state facilitates unidirectional electron flow releasing heat as a product in the reaction. Metal contacts are placed on the cell’s top and bottom in order to attract the flowing current for external use.

Although many semi-conductive materials can be utilized in this solar cell construction, the most commonly used material is silicon. The single crystal solar cell is one made from silicon. Various chemical properties found in silicon exist in the crystalline form. A silicon atom possesses 14 electrons in 3 different shells which surround its center. Each shell must contain its desired number of electrons in order to be stable. Otherwise, it will be seeking to give or get additional particles in order to achieve the balanced state. The outer silicon shell has only 4 electrons, thus it searches for 4 more to fill it up to the desired number, 8. Electron sharing with an adjacent silicon atom, also seeking ways to satisfy its outer shell, conveniently forms a crystalline.

Pure silicon is not ideal for solar cells due to its poor electron conduction. Therefore, impurities are added to the silicon to improve the solar cell process. The addition of impurities to a pure substance is a process called doping. Phosphorous and heat energy are added producing the free carriers optimal for the photovoltaic effect. The 2 opposing layers necessary for the DC current desired in silicon are produced by doping. The N type solar cell (negative) is produced through adding phosphorus, while the P type solar cell (positive) is made by adding boron. The P type has free holes in its structure making it a prime acceptor for the electron giving N type and completing the cycle for electricity.

Solar power is efficiently generated by this method using numerous solar cells directly converting solar energy into a steady electron flow arranged in a specific way. Solar panels are the patterned arrangements which gather solar energy on their grid surface. Solar panels generate the power which if combined together have the propensity to power just about anything from a phone to a city. All this power is supplied without leaving an environmental footprint upon the planet.

How Homemade Power Works

Homemade energy represents the energy for the future. Have you ever wondered how the calculator on your table works? There’s a good chance it’s powered by the sun. On the front of the calculator, you’ll see some darkened gray panels. If these panels are on your calculator, it runs on solar panel technologies. So how does the calculator magically turn off and on with no batteries? These calculators use photovoltaic cells. Photovoltaic is made from two words: (voltaic) electricity and (photo) light. Photovoltaic cells are groups of cells or clusters. They convert direct sunlight into electricity for human consumption. It might appear to be advanced technology to enable photovoltaic cells to power a simple gadget like the calculator, but this technology is being applied to the things we use every day.

Photovoltaic Cells and How They Work

How do photovoltaic cells generate sunlight into electricity? They’re made with semiconductors. Silicon is the main materials used in solar semiconductors. When the direct sunlight hits the solar semiconductor, the properties in silicon absorb some of the sunlight. This produces the solar energy contained in the sunlight and transfers straight to the semiconductor. Unrestricted flow of current will turn the electrons loose and generates a magnetic field that makes the electrons turn on like a running water faucet, generating an electrical current. Solar panel’s new technologies work by introducing metallic contacts on top and bottom of the solar photovoltaic cell. The amount of solar energy is determined by the total current adding some voltage in the cell. Those are the basic principles in how photovoltaic cells work.

Advancements In Solar Power

A new technology advancement in solar power technologies known as dye-sensitized cell (DSC) could result in the panel disappearing itself. DSC was invented in 1991 by a chemist that works at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, named Michael Gratzel. DSC was awarded the nickname “The Gratzel Cell” in his honor. This new modern marvel of engineering is made in layers composed of solar nano-sized semiconductors; which are super thin crystals on the top of a layer, made of titanium dioxide. When the direct sunlight hits the photosensitive thin layer, the loose electrons attach on the titanium dioxide and generate a current. Organic materials called dye lays, attach to the titanium dioxide. The dye works like a sponge attracting sunlight and pulling in the free electrons, making an electrical charge.

Photosensitive film is manufactured into thin layers; the material is transparent, flexible, lightweight, and very affordable. The thin sheets can be attached to glass surfaces like sunglasses and windows. The film generates a charge that’s enough to power any small battery including and cell phones and Mp3 players. The government has adapted DCS solar panel technologies for use in military applications. This thin film can attach to power laptops, lights and even tents. On a much larger scale application, there’s enough stored solar energy to supply an entire military command center. Even soldier’s backpacks can be designed with solar panels to generate all of their communication devices. Some scientist say, in the future, eliminating batteries all together. Now that’s ingenuity. Home solar energy on an intelligent level for modern technology in solar power.

Harnessing The Sun’s Rays

Converting the sun’s rays into usable electricity is solar power. This can be accomplished either directly by photovoltaics or indirectly by concentration.

PV Power

Direct conversion utilizes PV(photovoltaic) effects in transferring a light wave into an electric current. This technology applies solar photovoltaic arrays or solar cells in the energy conversion from sunlight to electricity. Directly producing electrical current harvested from the sun, solar cells have the capacity to recharge batteries or power machinery. A well-known, simple example in single solar cell utilization is a pocket calculator. Solar arrays are arrangements in the photovoltaic modules grouped together from numerous cells. Larger applications used for power sources in remote areas, like pipeline cathode protection, emergency roadside phones and remote sensing employ solar arrays. Another example for PV solar array technological use is the orbiting for satellites or other spacecrafts.

CSP Power

Indirect use involves a concentrated solar power (CSP) beam harnessed from a massive sunlight area utilizing a tracking system of mirrors and lenses. Solar air conditioning is an industrial heating and cooling process which uses CSP for solar concentrators. Four prominent technologies exist today in CSP including dish Sterling engine systems, parabolic troughs, concentrating photovoltaic systems (CPV), and central receivers.

2 Conversion Methods

Two main power forms which currently use solar energy are photovoltaic and thermal conversion. PV conversion, aka solar panels, generates electrical power straight from the sun. Thermal solar power takes advantage of the sun’s heating ability to power machinery such as turbines which in turn, generate the electricity.

Solar heating for hot water systems can function at 3 levels (passive, active or mixed) fully optimizing thermal collectors and tanks for storage. Solar thermal electrical power plants utilize hot water panels to generate solar hot water for light industrial and domestic applications. Passive and active solar designs employ thermal solar power in building design as a heating control, as well as ventilation regulation.

Several different applications for solar power exist with many gaining increasing popularity in the US. Solar lighting which uses natural light illumination as a reduction in energy consumption for electricity has become a cornerstone in architectural design orientations for buildings, windows and skylights. Solar panels strategically placed on building exteriors which continually charge during the day provide an excellent source for free electrically powered streetlights at night.

Solar Powered Vehicles

Electric cars and hybrid versions are rapidly becoming mainstream utilizing built-in solar panels to power vehicles. The developmental focus on efficiency optimization and solar cells fragility have kept the cars very small, only able to fit 1-2 people. However, solar car technology is being increasingly driven by the consumer demand for comfort and power, as well as efficiency.

Solar power is even being experimental used in modern boat plans designs. New vehicles using solar cells as a means for harvesting the clean, abundant energy from the sun are on the transportation horizon.

The future in solar power is definitely brighter. As we increase efficiency and effectiveness in solar energy harvesting, as well as increased utilization, we progressively move toward more conscious efforts to live harmoniously with the planet rather than damaging the Earth which sustains our life.

A Long History Of Solar Power Satellites

A NASA scientist, Peter Glaser, promoted Solar Power Satellites in the direct solar radiation conversion to DC electrical power in space unobstructed and with full intensity possible in 1968.

Since 1970, the idea for harvesting the sun’s power via satellite transmission in space for use on Earth has been extensively researched.

Solar Power Satellites (SPS) are solar based power systems (SBPS) which collect solar energy and beam it back to earth. The energy is converted into electricity then to microwave, and then back into electricity once it’s received on Earth. The last electric conversion takes place by retina which are basically antennas. This high collection method allows efficient power transmission redirects and eliminates ecological interferences, as well as weather concerns. Another benefit for using solar power satellites is the ability to collect solar energy for extended periods of time, further increasing the overall efficiency and effectiveness in conversion.

Although initially very inefficient and bulky, SPS have transformed into highly effective and incredibly efficient energy collection devices. Solar power is converted into electricity at a rate of 42-56% by modern hi-tech SPS, according to Neville Marzwell another NASA scientist working in California’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Solar energy loss seen on Earth through absorption and reflection as it enters the atmosphere is not an issue in space. SBPS not influenced by weather, plants or seasons are 144% more efficient than solar power systems on Earth. Constant solar energy collection and direct microwave conversion not subjected to typical losses associated with energy conversions are two of the best reasons for SBPS advocacy.

Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada uses photovoltaic (solar cells) panels to track one axis for the sun at the Nellis Solar Power Plant. Satellites are also using solar panels for energy. These solar panels are arrays of solar energy collecting cells which provide the power for satellite electrical systems operation. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels capable of producing 160v are presently utilized on the International Space Station.

PV is a direct generation for electrical power using semiconductors exhibiting the photovoltaic effect in the conversion from solar radiation. Solar cells which contain photovoltaic material comprise solar panels used in PV power generation. Current photovoltaic materials used include monocrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, polycrystalline silicon, copper indium gallium sulfide, and cadmium telluride. Electrical power has traditionally been supplied by PV in space transportation.

The development in power devices resulting from silicon carbide (SiC) technologies are continually pursued for increasing longevity in space exploration. SiC substrate defect reduction has been addressed regarding micropipes, but recent exploration looks into defect reduction as it relates to power device performance.

A nonprofit organization founded by Gerard O’Neill who was a visionary physicist, the Space Studies Institute, identified Lunar materials to be able to provide over 99% of all necessary materials to construct SPS. This results in a near 97% reduction in SPS building costs currently launched from Earth.

Considering the limitless options offered in the future developments for Solar Power Satellites, it’s a wonder we’ve waited half a century to take advantage of the incredible solar energy which has always been available.

Advantages of Business Residential Solar Systems

Businesses own residential solar power is on the move with businesses changing corporate gears to solar power panels. This is becoming a promising alternative to conventional electrical power. The Federal government and almost every state is offering incentives to residential businesses to switch to cleaner energy sources. The ever changing rates from electrical supply companies compared to the endless supply of natural energy of the sun are a prime motivation. Residential businesses that invest in this new technology are seeing long term returns as well as residual income from this technology. Electrical supply companies have been enjoying a monopoly for years with fluctuating electrical rates that can soar like a skyscraper. For this reason, residential businesses have often had difficulty predicting their future expenses. Solar power is one counter measure that offers protection to residential business enterprises.

How Does This New Technology Work?

Contractors will install photovoltaic cells on top of the buildings roof or nearby on the ground. These highly advanced cells take energy from the sun and convert it into direct current (DC) power. A special device called the inverter, harnesses this energy and converts the direct current into alternating current (AC) power. Alternating current is what you would find most electrical suppliers that sends energy from their own utility grids. Alternating current is then sent to a service panel or a breaker box inside the facility and allocated to various locations. When commercial solar power is used effectively, the excess energy can travel into the electrical supplier’s power grid through the meter in the building. The meter will often actually reverse direction resulting in credits being issued by the local utility company.

The Benefits of Renewable Energy

1. Producing natural energy from the sun ,means the Earth’s resources will last longer reducing the use of fossil fuels. Going green for residential buildings reduces the effects of harmful global warming and the amount of pollution we put into the Earth’s atmosphere.

2. Solar energy is very reliable and relatively inexpensive to maintain. Photovoltaic cells originally were designed to be used in space exploration. They were extremely expensive to replace and therefore had to be made for long periods of longevity. They virtually require no maintenance and thus, are a perfect solution for residential buildings and residential dwellings. The system is so energy efficient and maintenance free, manufacturers of photovoltaic cells offer a 25 year warranty.

3. Residential business can benefit from reducing their operating costs. Solar power will lower businesses’ electrical bills and in many instances generate a positive cash flow. Buying a solar power system for your residential business will be an investment in your own bottom line for years to come.

4. The biggest reason why residential solar power is so effective, is the protection from unpredictable price hikes from the utility company. An residential business’ infrastructure is greatly affected by soaring electrical rates and requires financial stability to ensure its viability.

5. By upgrading to residential solar power, residential businesses can reduce or possibly eliminate the exposure to such threats.

How We Will Be Using Space To Power The Future

Solar powered satellites beaming the clean, renewable energy from the sun may soon become the primary power source for the entire planet. The biggest problem we’ve encountered since the 1970′s with solar powered satellites remains the enormous cost of getting the needed material into space. Devising a method able to significantly reduce the expense incurred when putting the satellite components into space enough for SPS energy to be more economical than coal, currently at 2 cents/kW, over a ten year period is essential in making solar space power practical.

Another hurdle to solar powered satellites is solar cell efficiency. In 1999, the SERT program conducted 2 investigations into highly efficient solar cells. The first was a conceptual semiconductor array optimized for solar power absorption through the emission spectrum for solar energy. Varying sizes for quantum dots were arranged for optimal radiation capture during the solar cycle providing a theoretical efficiency between 50-70 percent. The second investigated “rainbow” cells which could be tuned to focus specific ranges for the various wavelengths through a prism.

An enabling Space Solar Power (SSP) technology for LEO (Low Earth Orbit) to GEO (Geostationary Orbit) transfer are Ion Thrusters. Electric propulsion advancement studies indicate a payload increase in transfers from Earth to orbit by a factor of 5 in comparison to cryogenic thrusters and storable biprop. Other comparative studies indicate Hall thrusters provide better total benefits such as fine power density, speedier trip times and more contemporary base for technology. All beneficial for acceptance by the commercial industry.

Solar arrays and single operation direct power drives have advanced payloads from chemical propulsion’s 2 metric tons to allowing payloads from 13-15 metric tons/20 metric tons from launch to LEO. Alternative fuel sources to xenon such as mixtures in noble gases and krypton have also been proposed.

EROEI (Energy returned on energy invested) may work well as a metric for other energy sources such as coal, natural gas and oil due to their eventual exhaustion. However, NEG (Net Energy Gain), according to a Wikipedia article on this topic indicates payback period or NEG to be a better sustainable metric.

NASA has just funded a proof for concept design for a Solar Power Satellite which would be placed high in Earth’s orbit harvesting energy from the sun via a flower shaped photovoltaic array. The SPS-ALPHA is the modular array design from John Mankins, a former engineer for NASA. The humongous array consisting of thin-film, movable mirrors constructed piece by piece in space, will use its curved reflectors in redirecting solar energy to photovoltaic panels. The panel collection inside the SPS converts the sunlight into microwaves transmitting them as low intensity, low frequency waves back toward the Earth. On Earth, power plants receiving the microwaves are able to increase the power grid by energy conversion into electricity.

Increased solar cell efficiency, better fuel sources, cheaper ways to get satellites into GEO and perhaps even a reassessment on how we evaluate sustainable solar energy payloads are all presently working advancements in Space Solar Power technology which will bring us closer to the harnessing the best supply for renewable energy the solar system has to offer, the sun.

Incentives for Home Solar Energy

Throughout the solar system the most vital and abundant and resource is renewable energy. It’s no surprise there’s an increasing interest for homemade power. Even if we was to use this natural energy supply to it’s fullest extent, we could never run out of this energy source for billions of years. This is clearly why Federal government agencies are adapting new incentives for the promotion of renewable energy in the form of rebates. This article will explain some programs available for energy rebates.

Programs For Energy Rebates

One of the newest incentives for residents, is the thermal rebate program. One of the first things mentioned in the program addresses the ways in which installing a solar water heater in your house will dramatically cut down on the electric bill. Hiring a certified contractor to install the thermal panels is considerably less expensive than one might think, especially when factoring in the benefits of having an endless supply of hot water that virtually pays for itself. Every time you run the dishwasher you use a considerable amount of electricity to heat the water to the required temperature. Even though most dishwashers are energy efficient these days, imagine never having to worry about paying for the hot water supply. Solar powered water heaters solve all these issues and give you an endless supply of hot water.

Electricity would no longer be needed to do your laundry and there would be no time limit on taking a hot shower. The renewable energy program offers a rebate program to supplement the cost to install the system. The program is headed by the Clean Energy Centre and offers an attractive reward of $1,000 to install a two panel water solar heater system. Going green has many added benefits for not releasing harmful pollutants and runs clean with little or no maintenance. Solar power can even give you a credit with your local utility company. Any amount of energy not needed,is transferred into the local utility power grid. You should get a signed agreement with the utilities provider stating you will be issued a credit in your electrical bill for excess energy you supply.

The Pilot Program

The new Pilot Program for energy rebates, encourages homeowners to take part in green energy and solar power technology systems. The program got it’s start when Mayor Tom Menino put into effect, the residential pilot solar program , that guarantees the rebate will lower the price of installation. The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act is matching with efforts to make clean renewable energy affordable to all residents.

Residents can expect to receive refunds anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 dollars. Those are some remarkable numbers considering the price installation isn’t much higher. If you want to save some serious money, you should be looking into these lucrative offers from the American Reinvestment Recovery Act. Homemade energy is being made more affordable for all residents with energy rebates making going green affordable for everyone.

Going Green With Homemade Power

One option to save money and be Earth-friendly at the same time is to invest in home solar energy. This uses new innovations in technology, that’s eco-friendly and is a great substitute for residents who want to heat and cool their houses using only the sun. Residents from all over the world are quickly realizing the idea of appliances that use renewable energy. The biggest reason is the amount of money saved in monthly electrical bills.

Solar panels are designed with photovoltaic cells that are tied together to create a panel. The cells absorb the sun’s natural energy and convert it into usable electricity. These systems are hooked into local utility grids. Any energy not used by the dwelling can result in energy credits from the utility company. The panels can be positioned on flat and angled roofs, adjusting the angle for optimal performance. Residents who are concerned about aesthetics can have the system installed on the ground up to 1,000 feet away. It’s not recommended to go beyond this distance if you’re looking into this application for installing your system.

How To Find Free or Affordable Solar Panels

What many residents are turning to is the DIY (“Do It Yourself”) Method for home solar panel system installation. People are always looking for alternative ways to save money and doing it yourself is one way of accomplishing that goal. This project isn’t very complicated and homeowners can actually have fun building it. You must be able to follow instructions, have patience and extra time on your hands. Sometimes you can find components that have been used and get them for free to build your panels. Once you build one panel and understand the concept, building the rest will be a walk in the park. The process is the same for constructing every panel and it’s so simple to learn, an eighth grader could build them.

Federal government agencies are offering rebates and incentives in many states for going green. Homeowners can benefit from solar energy grants, some of which even cover the cost of the entire project. With changing weather patterns, home panel systems can help residents in the event a power outage occurs or a power grid blacks out. Running at full power isn’t likely, but you should have enough sufficient energy stored to run the basic necessities.

Solar energy produces no side effects and runs pure and clean with no maintenance to worry about. Once the system is installed you will notice a substantial difference in your electrical bill almost immediately. Sometimes owners even receive a check in the mail from the utility company! How exciting would it be to be paid for the excess energy you didn’t need? This new technology leaves a smaller footprint on the environment and contributes to a healthier world for everyone to enjoy. With federal grants and incentives making this a worthwhile investment, residents can see the potential for homemade energy in a home panel system.
